which - I would assume the main jet was first, but you never know.

I didn't get as far as the fuse. After disconnecting the switch, I used a
wire link across the plug to check the fan worked, it did, so the only bit
that could be broken was the switch.
It's now been replaced and everything is sorted - until the next time!

Pulling the vacuum hose can make a small difference, a leaner mix leading
to a slight increase in rpm sitting at idle, as you say, effectively the

The service kit arrived on Thursday and the carb was stripped, cleaned and
rebuilt on Friday.
I didn't find any eureka bits of muck anywhere but there were some odd bits
around which may have added up to a problem.

Nope, no injection, it's an '86 XR2 under the bonnet so a twin choke Weber
and breakerless ignition do the job.
I've been looking at the book and I've just found that it has an ignition
relay, better check that out too.
Tomorrow I'll run it again in 'fault mode' and see if my ignition
about it), I know
it's most probably an earth fault somewhere, I've yet to go through the
wiring diagrams, but if anyone's had anything similar, a starting point
would be appreciated.
At the moment I'll start with the main engine bonding lead and work out
from there.

(the middle of the hole) to the bit that the cable sits on. When this
radius is bigger, the cable moves further for the same angular movement of
the pedal and the bite point will be a bit further away from the

Your set-up may be different, but on the rear brakes on my early 2+2 I
didn't fit the load compensator and I use the 17.5mm cylinders which are
meant for a non-XR2 Fiesta.

I agree with you Jim.
The Fiesta would need the anti-roll bar and removing it would be a
modification that you would have to tell your insurance about. Not so sure
about an MOT though, nothing to say you can't modify a vehicle as long as
it can continue to pass the required tests, and body
the anti-roll bar links to act as spacers for the
shock absorber bolts but I have since replaced the bolts with slightly
shorter ones (high tensile, not stainless steel).
Just an idea, I believe in 'Keep It Simple'.

Hi All.
After spending the best part of last Sunday rebuilding my engine. I'm
now pleased to say that my 'Q' is now firing on all 4 cylinders again.
There was a very visible difference in the shape of the cam lobes
between my old camshaft and the new one so that was a worthwhile part
of the job
Glad to see the picture worked for some. It didn't appear on the post
or my e-mail.

As for removing the pulley, I've modified my lower cambelt cover, the
bit with the timing marks on it, so that I can remove that without

I've checked the compression with my shiny new compression tester and
found that No's 3 4 cylinders have no compression, didn't even
register on the scale!
So, tomorrow I'll take the head off and see how big the job is.

from the outside if I leaned against the door.
After some investigation, I found that the locking mechanism was just
worn, the only fix being replacement of the unit.

I've got a Witter Cycle Carrier on my 2+2 which works well but does
need a towbar fitted. It has a bracket mounted permanently behind the
tow-ball and when you want to use it you just slot the carrier into

Access to the seatbelts is through the side of the rear seat bench. It
may be carpeted over, but there should be a hole into the area.
Door cards - there is a capping available to cover the body colour
area, from Quantum I think.
