I have around 20 users connected to my redhat 7.2 server using samba. My
question is when I do a ps -uax it shows that all the samba child
processes are running as root not the actual user. And top shows samba
taking up over %90 of the cpu. Does anyone have any suggestions as to
what is going on?

The script editing was pretty straight forward. I just changed the following
line ps ax --width=1000 | grep [j]ava -server com.stevie.ChatServer.Start
| awk '{ system(kill $1) }' and added the -9 after the kill in awk.

Sorry everyone. I wrote an email detailing my problem and it doesn't seem to
have gotten
is already listening on that port. Suggestions on how to investigate this further? Keep in mind that I'm bearly into my infancy with Linux, so assume no prior knowledge to anything in your responses (in otherwords, please be thorough!).

Good idea, and I don't know for sure...but that would certainly explain the symptom.
Any idea how I go about shutting it down IF it's running? The documentation I have
only explains starting not stopping the daemon.

tac_plus daemon DID start with the RPM install, and I know how to stop it. Stay tuned

if I am logged in as a user, i am in a korn shell, i cannot ping local host
(the file /etc/hosts hasn't
changed) and when I start gnome(startx) i get the message localhost not
found, please correct the problem
in the /etc/hosts file.

The mailserver still does not recieve mail. I had a read and i think i have
found what i need to use, ipmasqadm.
Am I correct or am i going off on a wild tangent here!?
