I've never experienced finicky behaviour that's unique to address book
templates and I use them extensively.

I, personally, find it useless since hitting F4 without selecting any
text achieves the same thing. If you're in the habit of selecting text
from your message bodies for purposes other than quoting then
x27; which
means any character except a new line.
