required as a "capstone" class. At the beginning of the semester we talk
about what it means to say that psychology is a science, and we talk about
their conceptions of science and why

(Freeman, 1993) has an excellent introductory chapter. It begins by
discussing theory and its role and then goes on to discuss developmental

I continue to be amazed (five years into teaching) by some of the things our
students come to us having been taught. I had a student in a master's level
developmental psych class who thought that the best way to summarize an
article was not to rephrase each sentence, but to use a series of

the important elements wouldn't show if the title and affiliation were truly
centered. Dumb reason, but it's a possibility.
