FWIW, this _was_ a bug that has been fixed; in karmic, pulseaudio is now
reliably 0.5% CPU when no sound is playing. It's ridiculous to suppose
that in an idle state that it should be 10%. Please don't be so hasty to

After booting my computer, when first logging into Gnome, nothing
reponds to left or right click events. The GDM login screen _does_
respond to the mouse, so it's only once I'm logged in that the bug
happens. The cursor is visible onscreen

Your suspicion was correct - VirtualBox was indeed using ALSA. I thought
that the ability to output to multiple soundcards simultaneously was one
of the key benefits of the PulseAudio layer, am I wrong? And, further,
that ALSA cannot

Actually let me amend that. Based on a recommendation in a reddit thread
on this same problem, I tried out chrome - no choppy video on vimeo.
Switch back to firefox; choppiness. So this does not appear to be a
flash plugin issue per se; at least, Firefox is somehow implicated(?)

It's 10 times slower, easily, when scanning the camera for images. I
plug in the camera, digikam pops up, opens the camera import dialog, and
then just sits there for 20 seconds before even rendering thumbnails.
