if I try to toggle the brightness using the hotkeys up and down

After today's update to gnome-screensaver I am now having an issue with
the screensaver lock. I can use the ctrl+alt+L combo to lock the screen,

To prevent Update Manager from upgrading to 2.1.7, create the following
2 files:
/etc/apt/preferences.d/ike, which contains these lines:

UPDATE: after I removed Sun's JDK (which I had downloaded from
http://java.sun.com) the problem disappeared. Since then I installed the
JDK using the standard package management (Synaptic/APT) and so far I
