As noted on irc (and in this thread a few posts above), It's a fresh Kubuntu install with additionally ubuntu-desktop installed. New user, free drivers... I can imagine the problem not occuring when just using only a kubuntu or an ubuntu live cd, as I think my problem has to do with both KDE/qt
