Since I installed Feisty Fawn from scratch, and installed manually from
external tarball ndiswrapper v1.42, I have not suffered any hangup
anymore on my Compaq Evo N610c.

Dear All,
I am happy to declare my laptop hangup free. It is now rock solid. Did not
hang even once.
The trick is to add idle=poll as the boot option.
Enjoy.
Cheers
Linux user.

Possibly. I have AMD Turion x64, which is known to overheat. But these
points negate such a possibility:
1. Hangups happen even say just after 10mins of uptime,
2. I have it running with increased aeration (keeping a gap of about
10cm from the table) under the laptop for aiding in heat

Altough there is definitively a problem with wireless networking, you
might also suffer from overheating.

Hello there,
I am using Compaq Presario V3029au. amd64 laptop with 32bit ubuntu. Also
hangups on 64bit ubuntu.

My laptop shows random hangup behaviour. It hangs both when I am

A continuation of the previous comments:
The hangups happen even when I am running from the LiveCD mode. Also it happens
when I had openSUSE 10.2 and Mandriva 2007. Though I have had only ubuntu on my
laptop for 99% of the time. I have Xubuntu 6.10 on a desktop PC, and it shows

Are you using Beryl or Compiz? I'm having a similar problem on my
laptop and it only happens when I'm using both my wireless connection
and Beryl together. If I'm only using one of the two, I have no
problems. I'm using the proprietary Nvidia driver as well as a
ndiswrapper setup for my
Greetings Scott. To whom are you responding? I never used any of the
3D desktop and as you can read in the previous comments, it is clear
that in my case, the problem is the wireless driver.

Hello Hans. Really just a general response. I'm pretty sure my wireless
is at fault too...as my system had no hangups while I was using a wired
connection (3d desktop or not). I have only been able to reproduce this
hangup when using both my wireless connection and the 3d desktop. I'm
not sure
Removed Ubuntu ndiswrapper (buggy) and installed the latest ndiswrapper
from tarball. Works great. Now I only need to figure a good way to
connect to wireless networks using a GUI. nm-applet is not reliable and
does not save keys. :/

Tried to get ndiswrapper working as workaround of this bug, but
unfortunately, I cannot get it working. Thus I am stuck and without
reliable wireless on my laptop, I cannot make use of Ubuntu on it.
My problem has been reported at:
I tried a wired connection during the whole weekend, and my rsync worked
fine, without any hangup.
The bug is probably within the wireless module. Notice that I am not
using the standard N610c wireless card, but a 3rd party card, so I guess
that the problem is generic to all wireless cards, not
I force a crash at around 03:25. Seconds before the provoked crash, all
was running well, including networking. I will try a wired connection
another time.

I can now reproduce the bug at will. I boot my Ubuntu system, login as
my user, start a simple gnome-terminal and perform an rsync which tries
to send a file from my laptop to my home server.
The machine hangs up, solid. The display and the keyboard do not
respond and I have to perform a hard

Since my last post here, twice I witness the following behavior before a
total freeze.
I was browsing the web, when I noticed that neither Firefox nor
Thunderbird could connect anymore. About 10s later, the computer hang.
Thus, sometimes, the network goes down first and the system later.

Ooh, that's helpful info.
can you post your /var/log/syslog from the time of the crash? Does the
crash still occur if you are not using wireless?
Thanks!
