It seems this problem occurs in karmic once again. As above mentiond chmod 775 /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.system solved the problem (at last for me :-)). Additional Information: runing /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 from a terminal gave no errors. The Problem was only seen direct after
