Reading around a bit, I think the problem is from the device requesting
USB 1.1 instead of USB 2.0. One workaround seemed to be very daft in
that it removed the use of USB 2.0 from your system, so I wouldn't
recommend it. Since card readers are so cheap these days, I'd just get a
better one.

utilizo o Ubuntu 9.04 e tenho todas a linhas referentes aos repositórios

Existe sim. Dah uma olhada no Adicionar e Remover Aplicações que tem
alguns programas para isso. Não uso nenhum no momento, então não sei lhe
indicar um em específico.

Realmente o Arch tem uma diferença gigante sobre o Ubuntu em
performance em geral.
Dificil o Debian/Ubuntu comecar a usar pacotes i386 ja que eles
garantem funcionamento em qualquer Hardware, principalmente o Debian.
Mas tambem acho a ideia de i686 super interessante.

Só mais uma observação - uso 64 bits pq além de ter 4 gigas de ram e
querer usar tudo, eu trabalho com programação e preciso frequentemente
usar os 64 bits da máquina (melhor precisão...)
