Just had a go on my set up 1.9.122
Under tools.menu, select options, then under openoffice.org writer,
click on view, then there is an option for graphics and objects (display
section)
By unchecking this openoffice.org replaced my graphic with a placeholder
with the caption, graphics

I tried with a simple one word "test.doc" made in MSWord97. Opening it from
"File/Open/All File Types" gave the Read Error. With file type as MS document I

I wanted to setup a script which could be run from a web page which
accepted a pathname for the word doc and then picked up the file and
dropped a converted file in a drop folder.

I agree, there is even a spotlight plugin. OOo 2.0 beta version does
work on Tiger, but it is a beta. NeoOffice will give you much more
satisfaction.
NeoOffice is OpenOffice.org 1.1.4 with better OSX support.
