Hi, Jose, Screen curtain is a part of Voiceover. It's used to darken the screen and give privacy. As far as I'm aware, it doesn't save battery life, because it doesn't disable the screen. I use the screen brightness setting, because it does improve battery life and works when Voiceover is off.

Hi, Joseph, Unfortunately, except for specific file types that are proprietary, I don't think you'll be able to do file associations with specific apps. Two download apps I can think of off the top of my head are Filer and Downloads. Dropbox will also give you options for opening specific files
