Harjit,
The NT Logon Authentication (Windows Authentication) method should work with
any native Windows user authentication mechanism, e.g. NT Domains, Active
Directory, LDAP, etc.

I think this is the idea that is being sought:
step 1.) tcp connection established
step 2.) authentication method selected/negotiated
step 3.) encrypted channel opened
step 4.) authentication occurs
step 5.) session proceeds (with or without encryption, depending on
settings)

Hi Erik, Vince, and everyone else...
VNCScan is licensed per-administrator as opposed to per-computer. When I
say $40(US), I mean that it is $40 per administrator that will be using
VNCScan. You can deploy/manage an unlimited number of computers with a
single $40 license of VNCScan if you only
yes it did, thank you very much.

On further investigation, it turns out I already had a service called

Eric,
Assuming encryption is used, is step three encryption link the same as in step
5 encryption or the encryption link is negotiated again for step 5.

I believe that depends on your authentication method. it is my
understanding that windows authentication uses it's own encryption, so
the session encryption would be a different encryption. with vnc's
encryption, I can't see any reason to establish a new encrypted channel,

incidentally, why the need for such detail on this?

Guys,
I'm afraid Erik is mistaken. The same server authentication, session setup
and encryption are used regardless of the user authentication scheme, unless
dealing with legacy viewers/servers.

Got it! The key for me was 1) my misunderstanding of the
/etc/services file function and 2) the location of the error logs
The basic problem was one of my server arguments had 'wrapped' to a
new line and was being read as its own parameter instead of a server
arg. And of course that 'parameter'
Dave,
Just in case you didn't get Eric's post, what operating system are you
using? What type of VNC and what version? All this would help us in
getting you the right answer to your question.

Take a look at /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf for these parameters:
AllowRoot=true
AllowRemoteRoot=true
One or both need to be true... You'll have to test it out.
