I figured it out... Needed to set (uncomment) a line in /etc/dt/config/Xconfig
to reset the Xvnc xserver on logout:
Dtlogin*terminateServer: True
It works fine now!

router, rather than the modem, logs in.
Either way, you will have the equivalent of a standard DSL modem with all
networking controlled by your D-Link wireless gateway router.
NAT and port forwarding should all be handled by the D-Link. VNC setup should
work fine!

Sys): make
the tunnel connection via PuTTY; then vncviewer should connect via
localhost:10.

You have both VNC's set to port 5900, that is display :0. Just change your
linksys port forward for 192.168.1.102 to 5901 -> 5900. Then connect from
outside to wan.ip:1 will route to 192.168.1.102:0.

Andreas,
The answer you need is here:
http://www.realvnc.com/pipermail/vnc-list/2001-September/025251.html
To use CDE login Xvnc must be started as an Xserver under the dt daemons.

Looks like almost everything is in place. It is not enough to just open up
port 5900-5909. What about port forwarding on the Linksys
Your PC's can all be set to run their servers on port 5900 but you need to
configure Linksys to forward inbound ports on the public address to VNC
ports on you
I am a Solaris guy, but run CDE sessions on Sun. If this is VNC related the
only thing I can think of is making sure you start your server with a
correct fontpath and I use a font server on Sun as that was the only way to
get the CDE fonts to display properly. The server start flag for Sun
is: -f
Yes, you will need an ssh client -- like puTTY -- with your ssh
configuration. You should be able to put it on the same disk as VNCViewer.

I am mostly a Unix/Sun Solaris user but I also have a Win 2K desktop and a
Linux box at home. I was enthused to see the Ultr@VNC announcement. The
posts of the past few days, however, leave me apprehensive which I suspect
is undeserved. There are only 2 questions that the Ultr@VNC developers nee

You could try routing your /dev/audio through a shoutcast server
(http://www.shoutcast.com/download/serve.phtml) and playing back on the VNC
clients with XMMS. The sound will probably be great, but the VNC
multiplexed video will be less than satisfactory due to the nature of VNC

Prajeeth,
172.10.1.1 is also a private address. You are either behind a firewall
and/or NAT router and will have to either NAT your machine to a public
internet address on your firewall or port forward ports 580x/590x to your
machine 172.10.1.1 across your router depending on how you are connected

Fred,
I've been following this thread from the start. I should have responded
sooner, but it's fun to watch the Linux guy try to help the Solaris guy all
the while wondering why no one searches the archive for answers! Follow the

purposes, you should make sure you allow root login from the

since physical access to the machine or Exceed client machine is not
necessary.
