Try Bering at leaf.sourceforge.net.  It is a floppy based firewall that 
uses the 2.4 kernel.

As far as *BSD being more elegant, that is your opinion.  Users 
should try *BSD, and then try Linux and decide for yourself.   

The fact that OpenBSD comes IPsec built-in and ready "out of the 
box" is very convenient.  Freeswan works very well from my 
experience, but it does require kernel patching as you've mentioned.
