In the end, I think this is a pretty provocative question.  If you have a 
platform which allows you to choose the "wire" protocol, and plug in the 
appropriate solution as needed, then it doesn't matter.  But, if you have to 
use 
a platform/implementation of a platform, which doesn't provide the ability to 
choose, then it really does matter which you have to use, because then you are 
going to have to provide an external gateway to cross over to another 
technology/wire protocol, or you are going to have to move to the required one.

Web Services is limiting choices to try and facilitate better interoperability. 
  There are clearly some choices that have to be made with more consideration 
than price and potential interoperability.
