I'm also a big fan of Joel on Software - a great blog that we all should track.
On the employee compensation issue, let's not forget that there are a big group of employees who are very happy just working for a salary - they are risk adverse and would never create their own business. If you compensate people in big chunks along the way, are they going to focus on the short term things to get more money, or on the long term goals? I'm all for a bonus for a job well done, but we're in this to create I'm in favor of share option schemes (that accelerate on sale), as it gets everyone to understand that they are in it for the long term, and whether an IPO or trade sale, they will make some money. In my last company (Netoria) we had a share scheme in place for management, but for the rest of the workers (about six people), we ended up just giving them a big chunk of money for each year of service. We did this for long term goodwill, and it seemed the right thing to do.
