I encourage anyone who thinks that programmers have vastly different productivity levels to ponder: https://www.readability.com/read?url=http://morendil.github.com/folklore.html You should also have a look at the research papers presented here, which appear to show that some people just can't program - no matter what their qualifications are. http://www.eis.mdx.ac.uk/research/PhDArea/saeed/ I wonder if perhaps the perceived differences in programmer productivity are due to either having compared people who can't program to those who can, or comparing those who know their tools and frameworks to those who don't (this can make a big difference in productivity as well, IMHO).
