More than $0.02 inspiring, Mahesh. I like the mix of things you've ended up with and your last line:
"We should all retire the minute the day we start working I think :-)" The idea of a financial sum being a mere confidence booster is an interesting concept. Need to mull over it. Taking a mental leap from there, maybe I should just assume that I have a backup pile and proceed from that point. I've not let money dictate my career for the most part - except for the past four years when I've been suddenly conscious of a responsibility to my daughter. And I can't say that's helped very much. On a lighter note, my daughter isn't austere and is already a shopaholic at this tender age! We have long discussions about money, but the minute her eyes alight on any shiny, pink object, all lofty thoughts go out the window. Striking the mundane note - one more thing one needs to be conscious about while consulting or having a more home-based tech business is ergonomics! The last time I consulted from home for a length of time, I got into the habit of using my laptop in a sofa, bed etc. and ended up needing mild physiotherapy for my neck and back. Occupational hazard. :) The discipline to get dressed and walk to one's desk when required helps to sustain one's spine. I actually have a lot of more questions than answers after this thread, but perhaps that's a good thing.
