Carpenter ants only chew into moist rotting wood, so if you have them,
that's a sign of another problem..leaky plumbing, for instance...or a
poorly ventilated crawl space condensing ground water vapor onto the floor
joists. This is why houses with foundation walls now have a plastic vapor
barrier spread out on the ground in the crawl space.
They [and termites] will start in a soft spot, tunnel it out so moisture
has a channel to make the soft spot get bigger, effectively making a sponge
that grows into a bigger sponge.
If the wood is dried out, the colony dies or moves elsewhere.
"Dry rot" isn't really "dry".

Wayne, I have had carpenter ants come in the house every summer to get away
from the heat. They lay all over the floor in and near the air conditioning
vents and no one wants an infestation in their home even if you love
animals. Plus I'm told they eat wood.
If aspartame, borax, or diatomaceous earth can kill them, I appreciate the
info!
Is borax the cleaning product? Jess

"...Terro ant killer..." a repellent??

Me neither, the ones that set up housekeeping in my wall because they
liked something about the place, they didn't ask; I don't go about
looking for "ant hills"

And I don't care; I'm a tree hugger, myself, and try to infuse a little
sanity into my confreres minds about so-called "invasive species", for
instance. It's almost never all black and white, except in print, huh?

A very good point, and I agree!
