Thanks Garnet, they have enclosed some cleaner with the machine which they tell 
you to use once a week, but I have only used it about five times.  I have 
cleaned it now with vinegar which I sprayed on and used a melamine pad to clean 
it off.  I then rinsed it three times with tap water and let it dry.  I did mop 
up the odd wet bit with a clean paper towel though.
I had always understood that the distiller left all the crap inside it though, 
and the steam was then pure, which is supposed to be the idea (I thought)
