I looked up Gout in my book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" by Balch & Balch. Always found this to be very helpful as it's balanced by an MD and CNC.
Cindy In summary, they say Uric acid is the end product of the metabolism of a class of chemicals known as purines. In people with gout, the body does not produce enough of the digestive enzyme uircase, which oxidizes relatively insoluble uric acid into a highly soluable compound. As a result, uric acid accumulates in the blood and tissues and, ultimately, crystallizes. Uric acid is a byproduct of certain foods, so gout is closely related to diet. Herbs: Alfalfa is a good source of minerals and other nutrients to help reduce serum uric acid. Take 2000 to 3000 mg. daily. Apply cayenne (capsicum) powered, mixed with enough wintergreen oil to make a paste, to affected areas to relieve inflammation and pain. This may cause a stinging sensation at first, but with repeated use, pain should diminish markedly. Cayenne can also be taken in capsule form. Other beneficial herbs: birch, burdock, colchicum tincture, hyssop, and juniper. Recommedations: When an attack strikes, eat only raw fruits and vegetables for two weeks. Juices are best. Frozen or fresh cherry juice is excellent. Also drink celery juice diluted with DW, not tap water. Cherries and strawberries neutralize uric acid so eat lots of them. Also include grains, seeds and nuts in your diet. Avoid these purine rich foods: anchovies, asparagus, consommé, herring, meat gravies and broths, mushrooms, mussels, sardines, and sweetbreads. Drink lots of quality water to promotion excretion of uric acid. Eat no meat of any kind (=high is UA) Do not eat: fried foods, roasted nuts or foods containing or cooked with oil subjected to heat. Avoid the amino acid glycine. Limit intake of caffeine, cauliflower, dried beans, lentils, fish, eggs, oatmeal, peas, poultry, spinach & yeast products. Considerations: DMSO applied topically for pain & swelling Deficiencies of nutrients provoke attacks: Vit. B5, Vit A, Vitamin E Candida or antibiotics increases UA.
