Yes, Telstra have a news server. I use it every day.

I have two 128K ISDN links and a dialup line with BPD. Both of the ISDN
lines are being driven by Linux boxes with ISDN cards, the modem line is a
backup.

In general, I'd characterise the service as being excellent, but not
perfect. The feed seems pretty fast, and threre is very little down time.
Their DNS is pretty sucky though - it seems to forget about our secondary
delegations every so often. Also, BPD have comissioned a web proxy server
that only costs 12c MByte for downloaded data.

At one of my sites, the router seems to hiccup every so often, which causes
the Linux box to drop it's guts, but the other site has been working
perfectly for years. In fact, it's still running RedHat 4.2 (with security
ugrades, and it was installed when this distro was the absolute latest
available!

I live on the NSW Central Coast. From the top of the hill behind my place I
can see the Sydney CBD. But we're never going to get cable, Optus or
Telstra. Also, it took nine months to get my ISDN connection!

Just be grateful you have a chance!
