Thanks Craig for correcting some problems with my previous post:

Yes - I misread it!

I can well imagine. I had two ordinary pairs here for phone and fax.
Then I ordered a third line, but there were no spare pairs in the
street.

Fortunately the Telstra installer chap was super-helpful and
understood my need for the new number to be on plain copper. So he
organised things at this end and repatched the three services at the
"exchange" building in Heidelberg (actually, thats where the RAUs are
- the host exchanges are in Greensborough and Exhibition St, I think)
so my fax and phone went on the pair-gain box he installed in my roof.
There is a matching pair-gain box at this "exchange" building, which
powers the box in my roof via the pair.

Later, they completely recabled the street and got into all sorts of
strife with my services. You don't want to plug a phone or modem into
the 90 volt or more signal coming along a pair which is supposed to go
to a pair-gain box. They didn't seem to have all that many more wires
in the street and there was no interest whatsoever in getting rid of
my pairgain box.

Thanks for confirming there is no compression with ISDN. For my
current usage, I am perfectly happy with uncached 56K modem access.
