Im sorry but i think you will find that news.com.au was registered before
the rules came into play.. ie before 1996 i think... You need to check the
dates here cos the rules did change with MelbourneIT becoming more powerful
or at least taking over it.
One person to talk to if you really want info is Robert Elz - ehhe good luck
tho.. he is the admin contact for the whole .au domain. he is prob a little
busy atm and i ahve heard you wouldnt be the first to suggest such an
action...
Besides, I don't mind that non-generic domain names are allowed any more. It
does prevent some squabbles and ridiculous squatting etc. I can see why they
have made that rule.

A couple of friends and I have been discussing registering the
business name "money.com.au" and then requesting that domain name
(money.com.au) from MelbourneIT. Quite obviously, MelbourneIT will
refuse the application due to the name desired being "generic".
Once MelbourneIT has refused us the domain name, we are planning on
taking the matter further and demanding that we are provided with the
domain name. If it's good for Murdoch (news.com.au), it should be good
enough for us.
At the moment, we are seeking others who are computer litterate (in
any OS) and willing to stand with us and help support our action
against MelbourneIT.
Once we win against MelbourneIT, we plan to develop money.com.au into
a financial site for Australians. The site and business will be jointly
owned by everyone who financially assists us.
