(1) happened for me earlier today, but I needed to shut down the
phone, so I copied the logs from /tmp to /tmp/save, so that they
wouldn't be overwritten on next startup... but unfortunately I forgot
that the whole of /tmp would disappear :-).)

why don't you just change the logs' locations?
in /etc/frameworkd.conf for fso and in /usr/bin/zhone for zhone?
i let fso write to /var/log/frameworkd.log and zhone to $HOME/.zhone.log
provided /var is mounted to a real fs and not tmpfs, the logs should survive reboots.

- when suspend doesn't work for me, I see the e17
power-off/lock/suspend menu pop up, and nothing else, i.e. the phone
stays on.

what happens, when you choose suspend from that menu?
