Ive recently got fibre from sky as opposed to BT, and still using the
supplied sagem router - all the fibre non-virgin services currently have an
"ordinary" router and the "openreach" modem linked together as far as I'm
aware, and all currently get you an engineer visit wether you want one or
not, so be prepared to take a morning off work.

I've never needed to call them up for any support on anything ever... and
I immedietly switched off wifi and am using my same old apple airport
device to do wifi, so my laptop and printer etc, just used the new
connection without having to change anything. So can't help with the apple
helpfulness...

One point worth mentioning regarding the master socket. It all does need
to be plugged into the master socket, and the engineer who visits fits a
new filter directly on. However, you should be able to (and I did) request
the master socket to be relocated to somewhere new during the visit. So my
new master socket is now in the office which used to be the only extension,
and the old hallway socket that isnt near anything useful at all is now the
extension. Everything syncs up and runs at advertised speed and is just
great really.
