Hey Rob - Fabric 2.0 will be a step in that direction.
https://vimeo.com/84300368 gives an overview of the thinking behind that
project (subject to change blah blah). We'll also be making Fabric
available in Houdini, so there'll be portability of tools between Soft and
Maya/Max/Houdini - this means it's not a binary choice. You might look to
continue on Soft for a few years, but custom tools etc get built on Fabric
so they're portable - then as you shift towards Houdini or Maya (or
something else) you can move things across. We also have our standalone
framework, but it's a stretch to imagine that being a full replacement for
Soft.

If you haven't seen what the Splice API means for portability, there's a
full demo here: https://vimeo.com/groups/fabric/videos/76325922

Lastly, I think we've proven to be a responsive company when it comes to
what customers ask for. Even if you're not yet ready to pull the trigger
and give us money, getting the free license and giving us feedback is a
good way to get us thinking about what you need.

Cheers,

Paul
