David, Sorry, I don't know the comprehensive answer to your problem. If I had a hunch, I'd say replace the flywheel and keep your set-up consistent with being a 1296 MkIII.
But mainly I'm replying to say - none of us think you are being ridiculous for trying this!! We have all (well most of us)either been where you are, probably more than once, or we expect to be there soon! I have found, and I'm not alone, that the best way to learn how to fix your Spit, and to develop the confidence to tackle any job on it, is simply to dive in, knowing that if you do hit a snag then it will be solvable, and there will be someone on this list eager to help and advise.
