I had one fail last week. No standpipe hydraulics were ever done. 150 PSI at the FDC and 400 GPM at 60 PSI from the 4th floor FDV. Much of the 4" is being replaced presently with 6" and the 2 1/2" that ran 10' from the Standpipe to the FDV is being replaced with 4". I thought blockages (coupons) in the pipe but after sketching and calculating, results were similar on computer. 12 elbows in the 2nd flr. ceiling alone. Regardless of manual or automatic; hydraulics are important. I'm amazed (again) at how uninformed some are.
Tom Chris: Loved your dissertation up till the end, about the tanker/tender shuttle. Our Fire District is about 482 Sq Miles, all the surrounding districts are of similar size. We have a single 2200 Gal Tender 1984, most of the other districts have the same. When our FDP finally arrives at a fire, sometimes 20 min. after the call, the haul distance for the tenders if often over 4 miles round trip, and that can very well be from a draft. Can't even keep 250 Gpm going until the second tender arrives (about 30 Min. later). I'd love to see a 1000 Gpm tender operation, but it will never happen here. On the same note we only have standpipes where there is water. Go figure?
