You can collect condensation ( which we do) by opening the top valve and
allowing the system to drain while you are performing the rest of the
inspection. Like I said, we work in 3 top spring break destinations and we
have learned.

The NFPA committee intent is for the top valve to be left open... And
they indicate as much in the commentary of the NFPA-13 handbook.

The condensate nipple is required to collect condensate and other
moisture from the system and to minimize the potential for excessive
loss of air pressure, possibly tripping the dry-pipe or preaction valve.

We always close both because with one open and active spring breakers,
we have had tripped systems.

Todd, The fitter was probably telling you the truth, which is that he
was taught to close both valves. When I started in the field in the late
70's, I was taught the same thing. This is a good reason to promote the
AFSA apprenticeship program so the fitters coming up now can be taught
the correct way to do things. And yes, according to the apprenticeship
course, the top valve is to be left open. Gregg

Subject: drum drip

When a drum drip is left in 'normal' position, which valves are open and
which closed? I always thought that the top valve is open and the bottom
valve shut. A fitter told me that both valves are supposed to be shut.
When I asked him where that came from, he admitted that's what he was
taught. Which is correct, if either?
