Subject: RE: Friction Loss

Strictly hand calcs, IMO a slide rule for fire sprinklers. It's a standard
slide rule on one side and has H-W buried into the other side. I have one
(that is older than me). I don't know where or if they are still available.
And when the enormous check that will fund my retirement clears you can have
mine.

Otherwise, I'd still classify it as hand calcs, put the formula into an
excel spread sheet. Can balance easily. I don't even try grids but even
that would be possible. You should be able to calc any tree in less than 10
minutes with excel.

I use both tools for estimating, but no reason they can't be used for
submissions. I'll email anyone that wants my spread sheet. Be warned it's
utilitarian not necessarily pretty. Also in there is graphing water supply
curves (not log on the axis), C-factor conversions and volume of pipe
formula.

Subject: Friction Loss

What is the easiest way to figure friction loss when doing hydraulic calc's
by hand? I know the formula that's in the book but I was hoping there might
be a reference chart or something you could use instead. I have a
"Construction Master 5" calculator for working with feet and inches but it's
not set up to do compound formulas like the Hazen-Williams, sure would hate
to have to buy another one just to do formulas.......
