This was a serious question, I wasn't being sarcastic. Really. My hope is that I'm missing something because I'd really like to use sidewalls on this particular project. So, anybody care to comment?

In regards to residential sidewalls, section 8.10.7.1.2 (02) says not to install residential sidewalls within 8' of a light "or similar obstructions." It doesn't provide any exceptions, such as the light being only 4" deep and the sidewall installed 6" down from the ceiling. It simply says you can't do it. Is a soffit along the wall opposite the sidewall considered a "similar obstruction"? I have a project where a 24" deep soffit is installed along 1 wall of the bedroom and along 1 wall of the living area (for ductwork). Disregarding the soffits, sidewalls would work wonderfully. If I consider the soffit a "similar obstruction", that pretty much eliminates the use of sidewalls. Am I missing something? Am I misinterpreting the intent of 8.10.7.1.2?
