Is this an ASRS system, narrow aisles, automated picker? What are the "cartons"? Cardboard, 5-sided plastic, combustible, non-combustible, encapsulated, etc....? Typically in these hi-rise rack systems the bottom tier is inaccessible to the picker so there is no regular storage of commodities, BUT that doesn't mean there is not "other" storage. In one instance I saw a lawn tractor and other lawn equipment stored in this "non-storage" space. In another case they had cleaning supplies and just misc. this and that. It wasn't wasted or unoccupied space. So to be on the safe side assume your storage height from the floor. And I wouldn't make the assumption that the fire would naturally start at the floor. A blown HPS light can send hot particles over an undetermined distance and direction. The fire could start anywhere one of those embers lands. Craig L. What the h--- is this storage? Class 4 and Group A in cartons?...what is this "hot load"? And to answer Roland's question...yes, it appears that 10-feet (or close to 10-feet) between sprinklers is the intent, but 110-feet of storage height is something I cannot imagine and I would hate to err on the lenient side...so go back to the question that I asked earlier. >>>>If your total storage arrangement is 35-feet high, do you design for the total height of 35-feet or only 30-feet high since the lower 5-feet is dead space?<<<< rick p.s. Gotta run to a meeting...will have to continue this discussion later if y'all if you wish. rick -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Fletcher, Ron Sent: Monday, January 05, 2009 10:25 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: 1st Level of in-rack sprinklers location No one gets shot on this forum (I hope), all opinions are appreciated. To play devils advocate though what would you do if the load height were 10 ft. instead of 5? The top of the first tier would be 15 ft. off the floor. I don't agree with the "source of ignition would probably be at the floor level". I think the most likely source would be a hot load containing something that ignites after sitting in the rack for a few hours or days. Ron Fletcher Aero Automatic Sprinkler 21605 N.
