Steve,

As a firefighter having hose valves on the roof is beneficial. if the roof
is large, i.e. where more than 200 ft of handline is required to reach any
point on the roof, then additional hose valves are needed.

The IBC identifies roof access and standpipe criteria, i.e. "4 stories",
"occupied floor >30 feet above lowest FD Vehicle Access. At three stories
and below fire department platforms or ladders with waterways can be used to
supply water to roof operations, above that it becomes difficult.

All "nominally flat" roofs at 4 stories and above need roof access from the
inside and hose valves. The tricky part is putting hose valves on the roof
where additional stairs don't extend to the roof. At least one stairway
should extend completely to roof level and all others be equipped with
hatches and ladders to the roof. Doing this would avoid the need to put hose
valves on the roof, a real logistics and maintenance hassle, allowing the
hose valves already at the top of each stairway to serve two purposes, the
floor they serve and the roof above.

So in a nutshell the fix is simple, require access to the roof from every
stair, one with permanent steps and a penthouse, the others with a hatch and
permanent ladder.

Hope that helps

Sincerely

We've got ROC in 2-1/2 weeks. I think it may be too late to make a

public comment (Yes Roland, I should know this) but if anyone has a

question or comment regarding this log, please send to me off-forum and

I'll throw it into the discussion.

Subject: RE: NFPA 14 roof access

I've reread (several times) the proposed change to 7.3.2(5) and I think

I

now understand the intent. But I'm still confused.

The proposed change to A.7.3.2 (also part of 14-53 Log#CP3) adds a

sentence

that reads "Only one standpipe is necessary to serve the roof, it is not

the

intent to extend each standpipe to the roof level."

OK, let's say we have 3 stairways and 3 standpipes. Stairway 1 has roof

access, stairway 2 & 3 don't. Per 7.3.2(5), we install a valve at the

highest landing in stairway 1. Per 7.3.2(5), we install a valve above

the

roof at stairways 2 and 3. So I'm having a hard time understanding how

"Only one standpipe is necessary to serve the roof, it is not the intent

to

extend each standpipe to the roof level" should be interpreted. I don't

see

anything in 14-53 Log#CP3 that mentions testing.
