Craig There are no consistent regimes regarding equipment standards.
In most of the Gulf States (UAE, Bahrain, Qatar) the local Civil Defence (= Fire Department) will accept LPCB, VdS and UL standards. FM listings are also generally acceptable. in addition, some of the UAE CD depts also maintain lists of approved components and systems. For example Dubai CD approved flexible connectors before they were listed by LPCB. There is wide availability of UL/LPCB listed pumps in all the countries and fairly good local agents. Mixed systems are common. For example. in Burj Dubai, the sprinklers are designed to NFPA 13, the heads are UL, pumps are LPCB, flow switches UL/LPCB, zone checks are LPCB, hose reels are US in the tower but BS in the basement and podium ! In Bahrain systems are mainly to BS, in Saudi mainly NFPA (but you will find German DIN with VdS equipment) Kuwait is BS/NFPA. Qatar is mixed with NFPA now appearing to take over from BS. In the UAE both US and UK systems appear to have equal status. Come back to me off line if you have any specific questions - I am currently advising on six major projects in Dubai, three in Abu Dhabi and one in Bahrain.
