Hi Thom,

Thanks for the feedback. We have been operating under the same set of
assumptions you are speaking of and we are starting to see lots of issues about
old pipe becoming severely tuberculated (for example the water map shows a 8 in
main, but the water test shows the main to now be equivalent to a 4 in main.
Some of the older pipe that was installed is unlined DI, the tuberculation is
brutal. The concrete lined DI does not share the same problem

So, be careful about assuming the pipe is good, if it was unlined it may be
much smaller than what it was originally.

Flow tests in well established areas need not be as frequent as in newly
developed areas. Example: Down town Seattle most likely has not changed
significantly in the last 20 years. A 5 year old test is still pretty close
to a current test, within the variance you'll see for time of day or season
of the year. However in a new industrial park, where 6 Mo. Ago there were
empty lots, and now you have Mfg. food processing and other high use
installations, 6 Mo. May have been too long.

Location Location Location!
Here in the dry west, we'd rather use a hydraulic model than flow an open
hydrant. We really need to save that water for Kentucky blue grass the
planners thought appropriate for a desert.

Subject: Hydrant Flow Test time frame for validity

We are reviewing our policy as to the length of time for use of hydrant flow
test data.

We have heard ranges from as short as 6 months to 18 months.

If the forum members would be willing to share thoughts as to how old of a
test is accepted by the AHJ's you deal with it can help guide our revised
policy.

Thanks in advance,

Rich Richardson
