The capacity is two circuits (each of two pairs of cables) offering a
total of 2000 MW import export, each operating at 270 kV. Both UK
and France use 50Hz but the DC link was chosen for better control and
lower losses. The whole link is 73 km with the under sea section is
48 km.

I did some consultancy on the Converter Station capacitor/thyrsistor
banks in 1994 after several overheats resulted in near miss fires.
They installed an air sampling system and I believe now use this in
combination with a thermal imaging camera to spot individual units
before they overheat and damage. (Power factor correction capacitors
are a common reason for fires in consumer substations ( ie 11kV/415v
substations inside buildings).

I was also involved the in the cross harbour interconnector in Hong
Kong which was completed in 1981 and allows China Light to import/
export power between Kowloon and HK island (where power is supplied by
a different company, HK Electric). The capacity was 300 MW - the
Kowloon side supply is connected via the largest underground
substation I have ever seen adjacent to the New World Hotel which is
actually built on the site of an earlier China Light substation which
itself was built on reclaimed land so the transformer chambers are
below sea level. The fire suppression on these was by CO2 - unlike
most of China Light's primary s/s where deluge protection is the norm.
