Don't confuse the issue, this is for large drop heads only. Not all dry
systems.

Subject: RE: Galvanized Pipe

NFPA 13, 2007

8.4.7.2* Galvanized Pipe.
8.4.7.2.1 Where steel pipe is used in preaction and dry pipe
systems, piping materials shall be limited to internally galvanized
steel.
8.4.7.2.2 Nongalvanized fittings shall be permitted.

Preaction and dry systems are very similar in nature with a few exceptions.
Both under normal operating conditions have no water in their piping.
Preaction is a bit more complicated due to supervision of the piping and
separate detection devices which evoke an opening of the preaction valve.
Dry systems are setup to respond to the opening of a sprinkler head.
Preaction systems, depending on what type you specify may require multiple
steps before permitting water into the piping.

There are multiple references in 13 where preaction systems are to be
classified as dry systems, depending on type of sprinklers used and other
factors. Look at 14.3.7.1, 15.3.6 for example.

Subject: Galvanized Pipe

Would someone be good enough to direct me to the specific location where
Galvanized pipe is required by 13 for Dry systems? And where it may be
indicated that Pre-action systems are considered "Dry". I've been trying to
find it on the On-line codes but I seem to be having trouble dealing with
their search engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
