Ok, my last comment - -there is NO architect NO FPE - no anything but US.

Guy calls, pls come put heads in these coolers. We call the fire chief, he
says, yes, just put heads in the coolers.

That's it. No requirements, no clarifications, no answers.

Thanks for the input.

Since the fed govmt is the owner, they should be more apt to accept reality
than a private owner.
The Architect should have considered this before the plans and specs were
issued.
I would tell them the plans lack proper design and since the specs don't allow
you to install piping in the freezer than the Architect needs to modify his
design.
You can't do the impossible. You are in the right, so put it back in the
Architects lap. Maybe on the next job they will consider consulting a FPE
before the plans are issued.

I can put ec sidewalls, but again, they won't meet the letter of the law as far
s obstructions go.
I believe that one ss sidewall will flood that space and we would be fine, but
las, code doesn't say that. Because these are free standing, and there are only
that are adjacent, reason would dictate that only the heads in 2 coolers would
ver go off at once. Calced out, we have plenty of water.

BTW, the ones I was referring to are the ones installed outside the building
ith the door being on the inside the building. Hence the sidewalls.
The reason I am asking the question in this particular case is that the
nits are free standing outside and we DO know what they are storing in
hem. Pendents are out of the question per the owner - Fed Govt - and the
ire Chief is unsure of what he wants. He is trying to make a bad situation
etter and we are trying to do it correctly without going overboard. 2 of
he coolers are side by side with a common wall so there is no way to put
idewalls on opposite sides of the wall even if we wanted to. They don't
ant pipe inside, EC heads will not meet the letter of the law due to the
nits inside.
I was trying to get a feel for what others are seeing/doing in these cases.

Most of the time it depends on the arrangement of the evaporators in the
reezer and rack layouts. When the HVAC units are hung down the center you
an most times access the walls for HSW's but if the evaps are down the
ides you can often use dry pendants in the ceilings.

n central Puget Sound I am used to seeing dry pendant sprinklers used in
reezers. I've seldom seen sidewalls used.

This came up on a recent job.
he GC said that everyone else does it, so why can't we?
told them they would need to sign a waiver and obtain Building Official
pproval.
The problem is the fact that everyone else is doing it, as you reference.
hey are setting a false standard.
I stood my ground and won the battle with the GC. At the close of the
roject, there was a meeting with the Architect called "Lessons Learned"
hich all subcontractors were asked to attend.
suggested that they invest in consulting a FPE to review their plans for
atters such as this. They replied that the jobs are bid design build for
ire protection.
didn't bother explaining that the individual that prepares my shop
rawings is a Fire Sprinkler Layout Technician and not a Designer/PE and
hat most sprinkler companies do not employ PEs.
f your customer would have consulted an FPE prior to bid, the PE may have
aid that we need room to run piping along the freezer.
Pretending the problem doesn't exist is not the best solution, I would tell
hem you need room to run the pipe unless they want to pay extra for a dry
ystem or antifreeze.
lso, if you use the large K factor dry sidewalls they zany store within 36"
f ceiling? Most owners would decline that option.

OK, honesty time here. None of the companies I worked for in the past
ever adhered to the 10x10 spacing rules for sidewalls in walk-in
 freezers and coolers.

Is this common? I know that many times you can't feasibly put heads
down the side and are forced to install them in the end making the
 coverage length well over 10'.
