Matt, There is no code or provision for being able to add a fire rating to walls or partitions by adding sprinklers on both sides, but I do wish I had a dollar for every time I have had an architect ask me this. It seems like it would make sense, but there is no listing or precedence that I am aware of for doing this for walls - unlike what is in place for glazing with window sprinklers and such.
Luckily, rated doors are not that expensive. Your contractor should just buy one. Good luck, Steve Kowkabany, P.E. I was hoping that there was some code or study that allows for a water curtain to be placed on both sides of the door in order to maintain the fire rating. Has anyone heard of anything like this?
