True if the heads are truly Back to Back, we have overcome this with Bld.
Official approval by offsetting the heads one joist space so the stud forms
the fire blocking.

Membrane penetrations only apply when penetrating only one side of the
assembly, see definition in ch. 7.

Subject: Through wall penetration with sprinkler heads

We have a situation that has been talked about in the past but I can't
remember what was resolved.
Back to back sprinkler heads in a double 2X4 fire rated wall. The
exception in the IBC 712.3.2 #3
deals with membrane penetrations and sprinkler escutcheon. What happens
when you have
a through penetration such as B/B sprinklers? There is no exception in
section 712.3.1 of the IBC
for sprinkler escutcheons in through penetrations and the manufacture
states that you cannot fire caulk
a sprinkler escutcheon. Would we need to use the donk style sprinkler
esch and fire caulk around the pipe?

Thanks,
Dewayne Martinez
