The first 4 year engineering degree program in fire protection was at IIT - Illinois Institute of Technology, formerly Armour Inst. of Tech. It started in ~1900 and coincided with the founding of UL, NFPA and several insurance rating bureau organizations. The program ended in 1985. When I went to school there, the required FPE courses included municipal water supply, sprinkler system design, hazard analysis (2 courses) and about 10 other fire protection courses. Then there were about 6 elective fire protection courses to be taken. This on top of the core engineering curriculum of mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, electrical circuits, etc. You could not graduate without being able to do a sprinkler system layout, pipe schedule and hydraulic design hand calcd. Computer science then was paper punch cards and run them through a monster machine.
Illinois did not offer P.E. reg in fire protection at that time. You picked any 8 questions from the core disciplines: ME. EE, CE or ChemE. I did all the water supply questions and some heat transfer. Passing grade was either 70 or 75. That was a long time ago. There are multiple routes to proclaim oneself an FPE. A degree in the field plus the P.E. is the best route, followed by any engineering degree and taking the FPE exam.
