I want to clarify how wrong I have been- no problem at the bottom of stairs, but I have been putting a head above the MAIN FLOOR LANDING at every level, because I considered it floor. With the clarification 'Where the egress path is the only available space in the stairwell, sprinklers should not be necessary.', I know I have been wrong. Funny, not one AHJ has ever said "this head is not required" :)

Cecil Bilbo Academy of Fire Sprinkler Technology Parkland College From: Pete Schwab Subject: RE: Sprinkler under first accessible landing See recent action taken at the ROP meeting in Savannah 2013 NFPA 13 ROP Proposal 13-247 (Log #329) Accept Add Section 8.15.3.2.3.1 Sprinklers shall be permitted to be omitted from beneath landings or stairways where the space under the stairs is blocked off so that storage cannot occur. Substantiation - The concept of eliminating the sprinkler at the bottom of the stairs has always been implied by NFPA 13, but the statement needs to be made more explicit for most AHJ's. Where the egress path is the only available space in the stairwell, sprinklers should not be necessary. > Subject: RE: Sprinkler under first accessible landing > Date: Fri, 11 Mar 2011 07:51:12 -0500 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > > Cory, the 13 handbook explains it a little better, saying it is because > storage can be put under the lowest landing and thus the requirement for > a sprinkler at top as well as under the lowest landing, exhibit 8.29 of > the handbook shows where the head is required. > > Richard Carr, SET > Design Manager > Associated Sprinkler Co., LLC > 336.373.3901 ext 217 > [email protected] > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Dewayne > Martinez > Sent: Friday, March 11, 2011 7:41 AM > To: [email protected] > Subject: RE: Sprinkler under first accessible landing > > Cory, > When I hear "first accessible landing" I picture the landing directly > above the lowest exit door way.
