Ed, Funny how our feel for overkill has changed! Before QR Reduction, 1500 SF did not feel like overkill, and the first few times using it felt like cutting corners, right? When I was trying to figure out the number for Low heat release rate using the amount of water required to control an LH fire, I actually came up with 21 MW, not 2.1 MW- (I thought maybe the original committee members agreed on a 10X safety factor, whether they wore Blue or Grey to the ROP). Thank you for the fascinating challenge. Brad Ps- here is a correction to my second act of Forum entertainment, re HRR: 13,100 kj/kg (6029 btu/lb). * * * * * * Thanks to all who responded. Now that I've had time to think about this and with the input from this great forum, I've come to some conclusions. A) I'm a techie, not a PE - so I can't deviate from what the standard says. Section 11.2.3.2.3.1 says 20' maximum ceiling height and doesn't differentiate between a lower ceiling or a ceiling pocket ceiling. Since my ceiling pocket ceiling is greater than 20', I'll be calcing a full 1500 sf.
I think it's PROBABLY overkill, but so be it.
