And that system was based on installation inside a building where it was tied
into a hydronic hvac system. So application to an underground fire main would
be a stretch.

Subject: RE: Firewater Circulation Pump

Two things to consider for any "Circulation system" to prevent freezing of
water in areas where the temp. would normally freeze the water.
Is all the water in motion? (your answer is NO. So at least parts of the
system will most likely freeze anyway.) Is there any heat source to create
input of sufficient BTU's to overcome any heat loss from exposure to the
below freezing elements? (Doesn't state this in your post.)

NFPA 13, 2010 3.4.2 "Circulating Closed Loop Sprinkler System" might provide
some insight, but remember this was anticipated to be used with "Other
building systems" and not for freeze protection.

Subject: Firewater Circulation Pump

Dear Forum,

Wondering if anyone can share knowledge/experience in regards to 'Firewater
Circulation Pump' arrangements as a solution to freeze protection.

Personally never heard of them before today but we have an enquiry in from a
facility that has one that is in place several years. 10" externally looped
main aboveground around a facility (approx 1500' worth). However it is not
performing as it was intended as he has had freeze ups. There are some
dead-end pipes feeding FHVs off this loop which I can't even see as being
feasible with the concept.

Below is a link that discusses the topic (page 60), though it doesn't have
arrangement details/schematic or such. Can anyone provide info or refer a
source that would provide details for the valving/arrangement.

Any insight would be appreciated.
