In the complexity of industrial engineering the amount of obstructions and other systems you need to work around and with becomes a major challenge. The fight for cubic inches in some of these projects is considerable. REVIT lets you design in conjunction with all the other building systems simultaneously.
You can't accomplish the same coordination in a 2D plane that you can when ever discipline is designing in 3D. No if you're doing a Walmart or 7-11, you definitely don't need a tool like REVIT. REVIT as it's being used in the industry now is not being used for anything other than a design tool. It has no analysis capabilities at all. Craig L. And its intent - as you say is for construction analysis, scheduling, and building maintenance. There are several levels information that can be stored in a Revit/BIM drawing, ranging from Level 1 to Level 7 if I remember. The most info that I've seen available in a Revit sprinkler block was minimum flow rate (15 gpm) and a thread size. If Revit took it to the max and included everything, what good would it be? Who would "repurpose" a system in Revit or for that matter, understand any sprinkler component? I have designed several Revit/BIM-based jobs - the primary purpose of which was coordination, of course. As for analysis though, pipe only screws in one way. Since 3d can be inserted into a Revit file anyhow, why use Revit for design? The only advantage that I can see is that if we throw out all cad programs (including Autocad), we can all do the same thing the same way. Am I misunderstanding something?
