REVIT is for architects and GCs, really. I would not want to do a
sprinkler system or other trade purely in REVIT. Our company does HVAC and
mechanical piping as well as sprinkler and alarm work, and we actively
fight to not use REVIT at the subcontractor level. Its very easy to go
'up' from AutoCAD to REVIT, but much harder to go back down again for
subsystems. We use REVIT to extract data from A/E RVT files all the time,
though.

For pure 3D coordination, you cannot beat 3D design and Navisworks Manage.
This should be your go-to coordination tool, not Revit.

BIM is not 3D coordination, but somehow has become an industry buzzword
that's now used synonymously.
I bristle when someone says 'did you check the BIM model?' the same way I
do when someone says that we're the engineering department. (all NICET
techs here, no PEs)

REVIT has some far-advanced tools, and for other sub-system trades, you can
really see the value. BIM needs for instant product data or engineering
tolerance data is a great thing, *think HVAC equipment, alarm devices, etc)
but its 95% overkill for 'dumb' sprinklers. Unfortunately, we're getting
our stuff dragged into BIM only because everything else is there.

Craig, do you actually do 100% of your sprinkler system design in REVIT,
including stocklisting and calcing, with something equivalent to the output
of SprinkCAD, HydraCAD, or AutoSPRINK? I remember when someone told me
that REVIT can lay out sprinkler heads and the like (HVAC grilles) and then
pipe automatically to them. This person (a previous co-worker) sold it as
a literal push-button-get-design system. When I actually had our reseller
come in and show us how this would work, its not nearly as complete as it
sounds.
