If the roof-level ESFR could spray below the catwalk (assuming open grating)
you would not need the sprinklers under the catwalk. But, as mentioned before,
you are forced to put a cover on the grating so should be able to install
whatever sprinklers can deal with the hazard under the grating.

Class IV shelf storage up to 12 feet high can be protected with OH2. Even
plastic shelf storage only requires EH1 or EH2 depending on height. ESFR is
overkill.

It is my understanding that the ESFR's under the catwalk are needed to address
commodity fires at the lower rack levels. Part of the effectiveness of the roof
level ESFR's is their ability to spray the face of the products on the racks
including those below the level of the catwalk. If SSU's are put down there it
could greatly reduce the amount of water that reaches the lower storage levels.

I'm trying to find the source for that...

We ran across this recently in an ESFR warehouse that has shelf storage with a
grated walkway at about the 8 foot elevation. Turns out they don't make an
intermediate level ESFR or guards for them to meet 8.12.5.3.3. So you are
forced to put a solid walkway but the ESFR sprinklers with large pipe still
extend down to where they can be damaged easily. Seems logical to protect the
area below the grating/covered walkway with quick response sprinklers for the
hazard involved (non-ESFR) that can be equipped with guards and be SSUs.
8.12.5.3.4 allows spray sprinklers for overhead doors.

I understand, but 8.12 is ESFR chapter.

Matt, we are not trying to omit sprinklers, just determine which sprinkler to
use ESFR vs control mode...

The conversation in the office kept going back to hvac ductwork and how you
would place an ESFR sprinkler underneath when it became an obstruction...
Normally there will be commodity stored under the duct, but in this situation,
no stock will be in the catwalks, just the racks... so the additional ESFR
sprinklers will spray the catwalks and not necessarily the commodity... is
this over kill??

The catwalk is no different than any other obstruction within the area, right?
For any other obstruction you would use the same ESFR's below the obstruction
as you used at the ceiling/roof.

Subject: ESFR Sprinklers and covered catwalks

Hello everybody,

I have a situation where a client is looking to install an ESFR system
protecting racks... they would like to add a solid floor catwalk system between
the racks. Do you continue installing ESFR sprinklers under each level or can
you install control mode sprinkler under the catwalks while the ESFR's at the
ceiling protect the commodity??
I did look up the archives and a few people have asked similar questions over
the years, but I don't see an answer...
NFPA 13, 2007 ed.

Thank you in advance!
Steven
