The player asks SN "can I have a PIN". SN returns a random number that
(since it controls the issuing of PINs) knows is unique for that time
period. The human gives the PIN back to SN, completing the cycle: ie,
SN knows which player it gave the PIN to, and the human entered it on
an account page, so it now knows which account to attach the player
to.

This is pretty much how a device is connected to a bluetooth phone as
well: my Nokia asks the phone for a PIN, it gets a number and I have to
acknowledge it on the phone (so some random bluetooth device won't
"accidentally" attach to my phone just because it is nearby).
