The player asks SN "can I have a PIN". SN returns a random number that (since it controls the issuing of PINs) knows is unique for that time period. The human gives the PIN back to SN, completing the cycle: ie, SN knows which player it gave the PIN to, and the human entered it on an account page, so it now knows which account to attach the player to.
